How Kumon compares
Compared against the 39 education brands in our database.
Training
The Instructor Development Program spans two semesters: first semester includes pre-training (8-11 hours reading/quizzes), two 4-day classroom courses (101 and 201), 61 hours of curriculum self-study, and 40 hours on-the-job training at a designated Kumon Center. Second semester adds courses 301 and 401 (3-4 days each). Ongoing training continues for the life of the franchise including monthly meetings and Instructor Achievement Testing.
Territory
Kumon does NOT grant exclusive territory, franchisees face competition from other Kumon Centers, company-owned Centers, and alternative channels including workbook sales. Franchisees may solicit students from any area but cannot target advertising near another Center or advertise for student transfers. Services must be offered within reasonable commutable distance of the Center.
Support
Pre-opening: training kit, site approval, furniture/fixtures at no cost, carpet/paint reimbursement (up to $5,500), sign fabrication reimbursement, initial materials for $2,000, and $3,600 in digital marketing over 18 months. Post-opening: free ongoing Kumon Materials (covered by royalties), proprietary software, 72-page Operations Manual, periodic Instructor Conferences, domain/email, and an Advisory Council.
